Kyle and I climbed 10,118 feet up Mt. Rainier on June 13th. It took us 10 hours to climb from the lodge at Paradise to the climber's camp at
Camp Muir. We spent the night in a small tent at the 9,600 ft. level. The temperature dropped to below freezing and the winds whipped along
at 35 to 40 MPH for most of the night. On June 9th, 3 climbers were trapped by a blizzard climbing to the same place. They didn't have a tent
or sleeping bags to keep them warm so they dug into the snow and huddled together. By morning, 2 of them had suffered frostbite and severe
hypothermia. The 3rd didn't survive. We didn't want to make the same mistake, so we took LOTS of safety equipment with us. When the 1st
photo was taken, we felt like we were on top of the world. The top of Mt. Rainer is actually 4,000 ft. HIGHER than this!!! You can see Mt.
Adams by the flag. Mt. Hood is a little bit to the right, and Mt. St. Helens is just over my right shoulder
These 2 pictures were taken in
almost the exact same location.
Kyle and I are standing on about
10 feet of snow. Lynn and Kyle
are in the same spot, but in July,
after all of the snow melted. (2004)
